Hi Oscarmegs,
Your data on the hard drive are lost due to physical damage. But don't worry, you can recover data from hard drive with data recovery software.I have succeed with Tenorshare data recovery. It can recover data after deeply scanning your hard drive to look for lost data due to drives crash, physical damage, system sabotage etc.
Anyway, download a trial version and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether your files can be recovered. http://www.any-data-recovery.com/index.htm

OK! It sounds like your hard drive is corrupted somehow. But, you also have possibilities to get access this drive.
In fact, corrupted drive could be damaged logically or physically. The logically damaged drive is still workable after reformatting. The inner contained data also could be restored with the help of data recovery software.
But, the physically damaged drive is often irreparable and inner contained data is also irrecoverable.
So, I hope you are lucky enough and only get a logically damaged drive.
So, plunge this drive to your computer and try to get back all your files back easily with some drive data recovery freeware here:
http://freeware-fix.blogspot.com/2013/03/external-drive-data-recovery.html

And then, format this drive to see whether it is repairable.
Otherwise, you have to consult an expert. That will also cost a lot.
Note: I hope you could learn a lesson to back up everything important on different drives, not only on one drive next time.

Don't panic, you can recover files from external hard drive with asoftech data recovery program. get it from
http://www.asoftech.com/adr/

I have used Asoftech data recovery for hard drive data recovery for about 20 years, and they have never failed me...including the one time a disgruntled employee deleted everything and then formatted the hard drive. OnTrack was able to recover 95%+ of the wiped data within 24 hours of getting the drive.

External WD 1TB. I cannot retrieve my files it says Parameter is incorrect when that is gone It shows there are no files on my HD and there are plenty of files all psd files as well

I'm sorry to say that this may be due to a corrupt HDD. WD Hard drives tend to die far too fast (I know too well unfortunately).
If this is under warranty, I would call up WD support service for a free replacement.
If you want to take more invasive steps, I will be happy to help you try and recover your files.

Hello, I have a new WD Elements 500mg

If you are using Windows Vista then format your external drive with exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table, aka FAT64), or NTFS. And if you are using Windows XP then only solution is to format drive with NTFS file system.
How to do that, just right click on HD from My Computer an click format.
