Just did this with my olympus E-420 and it worked like a charm. Everything is back to normal. I was able to reformat. There is a class of consumer that buys a complex product (like an E-420) and never sits down to read the owners manual before trying to use it. You're not one of those, are you?
Can you be more specific? Did you buy it as new or second hand? Did you respect all the instructions in the owner's manual? What is exactly doing? Might be some of these reasons: the battery is not charged; the memory card is not installed; the lens is not proper installed; the selector knob is swiched in the wrong position (play or set up mode); you forgot to remove the lens cap;

to reset your caamera to default setting follows the steps.
1. press menubutton(which is the second button from down in left side of your camera )
2. screenpops up in view fiender.
3. select the custom reset option.
4. there select th reset option ond press ok button.
and now your camera is resetted to default settings.
