I have a Panasonic DVD Video Recorder model DMR-E85H manufactured in 2004. It has worked perfectly for all these years but now won't power up at all. I have checked the only fuse I could find inside and it is ok. There is power to the machine at the cord connector. This is a recorder with a built in hard drive, not a cheap dvd player. .Any Ideas as to what the problem is?

The power supply board is the problem, one of the most common failure is the 1000uf capacitor "open" located near the power transistor that is heat sinked, value may be higher or lower with one or two caps, the second possibility is the power transistor may be open or shorted.

How do you re-tune the panasonic DMR E85H DVD Recorder. I have done exactly as it says in the manual and still it does not find any channels? Is it digital?

The tuner in the DMR-58H is a NTSC tuner (analog). Unless you have a low power station in your area, you will need a digital-to-analog converter box to record OTA stations. It can record analog cable without a box as well. (Digital cable will require a box.)

The manual for the DMR-E85H is available from Panasonic here: http://service.us.panasonic.com/OPERMANPDF/DMRE85H.pdf .

I hope this helps.

(at least in my area there is only one station broadcasting an analog signal; it is a low-power transmitter and thus wasn't required to upgrade to digital with the rest of the stations.)

Why won't dmr e85h pick up all the digital channels the tv attached to it will? Is it outdated technology? Do you need a digital set top box or completely replace the unit? Anyone...?

You most likely will need a set top box connected to this recorder in order to receive digital channels, Assuming the DVD recorder works besides this detail, you should not need to replace the unit. Only replace it if it DOESN'T work.

The DMR-E85H is a 2005 model so it is more than 5 years old.

Panasonic dvd video recorder dmr-e85h is dead

I had same problem. I replaced two bad capacitors on the power supply card. See http://vassfamily.net/projects/DMRE85H/dmre85h.html The capacitors I replaced were C1260 and C1261 slightly different from the one on "vassfamily.net". Everything works now for me...

    Good luck.

Also for those interested, I found the "commands" listed on http://www.dxcc.com/dmr-e85h.htm useful when operating the DMR-e85h to correct problems.

My dmr e85h display "hold" for 5 sec and turn off

The power supply board on the DMR-E85H has problems. The earlier boards suffered from leaking capacitors and the later boards from voltage regulator problems. If your machine is now dead, the fuse on the power supply board has also blown.Go to the following links for details and photos on how to fix: Replacing capacitors:http://www.fixya.com/support/t216825-dvd_recorder_frozen_please_wait_display Replacing the voltage regulator:http://www.rbjtech.net/electrical/e85/e85.htm#0 Hope this helps. My machine had the later ps board and the voltage regulator replacement worked perfectly.

    Panasonic DMR-E85H

No VCR required - A VCR is a video cassette recorder, which requires a video cassette in order to record source material. A DVD recorder, requires DVD discs and this model in particular has a built in hard drive so you don't even need discs either, unless you plan to share recordings with others. All you need is a 'feed' / 'source' from an external aerial like Cable or Sky etc.
    Does that help?
