My Nikon Coolpix S3000 has a lens error. When I turn it on it begins to focus but then turns itself off and turns to the lens error screen. Also, the shutter thing on top of the lens is slightly open. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

This camera needs to be sent away forrepairs. Just like a motor vehicle, some repairs to your camera require atechnical specialist to fix your problem.
I work at an authorized Nikon service center and I don't see many S3000 models coming in for repairs. Most camera point and shoot models that have an extending lens are subject to lens errors. Most of those errors are also a result of shock or impact and not manufacturer's defect. Hope this helps!

I planed to send it back to manufacturer, before packing it, I just knocked the back of camera with my palm in switch ON mode... the lens just retracted into normal position...
It can work for you to......
I am not an expert, it is just my experience I am sharing here. If Lens struck with Lens Error!! on the screen, charge the batteries, switch on the camera, when the lens tries to move, feel free to knock a bit hard at the back of the camera with ur palm...... you cant hurt it any more than it already is., it might help the misplaced gears to aline back in if it is a minor problem.
Sorry about this un expert advice but it worked for me...
Remove battery replace and switch on as you tap on the lens hood, repeat to see if the lens jamming is released. If not you will require the help of Nikon service for the estimation and spare.
This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
It doesn't say lens error? but it won't focus? it is probably the same as the other people who do have lens error displayed on the screen, the lens is broken is what the repair company told me about my s200 when i told me lens error
