Hi. I have a Lumix DMC-F55. The lens both won't focus well, and won't retract back into the camera body. A message appears on the screen: "Please turn camera off and then on again", but that doesn't help, as the lens doesn't retract." I can't pinpoint an event, like a drop-- nothing like that happened. Thanks for your help!

Hi,

I'm sorry to know that the Camera Lens is not focusing and retracting. I'll be glad to assist you with this. I suggest that you perform a power reset of the Camera and check if it helps.
Turn off the camera.
Remove the battery pack.
Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
Allow the camera to remain without power for 60 seconds.
Reinsert the battery pack.
Turn on the camera.
If you're able to access the Menu of the Camera, then reset it back to factory reset and check if it helps. Press the MENU button, press the Right Arrow button and select the SETUP Menu of the Camera. Now press the down arrow button to select RESET. Resetting the Camera will change all the settings to factory default.
Performing the steps should resolve the issue.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Hello

This is a tip explaining how we can try to resolve a lens error.
Firstly you will need to understand what exactly the lens error is, and how it came to happen.

The most common cause for a Lens error:

  • Misaligned Lens rings
  • Sand and grid wedged in between the lens and the barrel.
  • Dropping the camera
  • Ran down battery
Here is the Fix:

  • Batteries
Firstly you can try removing the batteries and replacing it with a new set of fully charge ones(2500mah).

  • Memory card
If the batteries ran down while you were taking photos with the lens extended, you might also get this error. Remove the the memory card and replace the batteries with a fresh recharged set. Try to power on the unit with the fresh set of batteries while the memory card is removed.

  • USB cable
Connect your camera to your computer using your USB DATA cable which came with the camera. Once the camera gets power in this mode, the screen should stay off, hence, supplying the lens with more power to push or pull out/in.

  • Barrel Guide Pins
Place the camera on a sturdy table with the lens pointing to the ceiling. With a fresh set of batteries installed(Do this without a memory card) hold down the shutter button while you power on the unit.

  • Compressed air and Vacuum
Now, you can either use a compressed air canister to blow around the lens area. This will result in the sand or dust particles to be blown out of the area between the lens and the barrel. Or, you can use a vacuum and and carefully place the nozzle around the lens to **** out the particles.

The following Fixes will be done at own risk and can even further damage you camera.

  • Tap your camera with the palm of your hand a couple of times to displace the lens into the original position, or to dislodge particles in the lens barrel.
  • Try gently pushing/pulling/wiggling the lens while powering up the unit.
I hope this can help you to resolve this problem, and send you well on your way to experience that Legendary Kodak moment.

Kind regards
Andrea

System Error (Focus) ...Lumix DMC-FS15 works, pauses, then results in a white error screen with the following error message:

My camera started bringing up "system error (zoom)" and it was completely inoperable. I would turn it off, but the lens wouldn't retract unless I applied slight pressure to it. I was able to FIX this problem by applying some lubricant oil to a Q-tip and swiping it around the telescoping parts of the lens, being very careful to stay away from the actual lens. I turned the camera on and off a few times so the oil could work its way into the parts, and it fixed the problem. I don't know if it will be a long term solution, but I can at least download my pictures to my computer now!

Panasonic DMC-FX35 error message

Sounds as if it has either received a knock, or foreign matter (grit etc) has got into the lens mechanism.
