Run this program and then connect the gps, it will then show what updates are available (not maps)
for maps your device needs to be registered on garmin website and it will then show you what maps you can buy for your device.

To update your nuvi, all you need to do is to connect your nuvi to an internet connected computer and the updates will show on the lower left of your computers screen, click on it and it will update it with the latest software version and maps.
You can also go to your nuvis website and search for latest updates. Just click on the map link and a list will pop up under the map link, select update maps if it is maps you want to update. It will ask you to choose your device from a list, after choosing your nuvi 255w then it will show you the latest maps for your gps, but you have to install its plug ins first.
That is how to update your gps.

software visit Garmin website: www.garmin.com/webupdater First you have to set up an account at Garmin using
the serial number on your GPS. Once you do that you can download firmware
update for free. After installing WebUpdater once from the Garmin
website, perform all future software updates from your computer. Simply connect
your compatible Garmin device to your computer, then run WebUpdater from your
computer's "Start Menu" by selecting "Start",
"Programs", "Garmin", and finally "WebUpdater" REMEMBER: It takes hours to
do a complete a map update.
Unless you bought the Lifetime maps you may have to pay for current maps. By the way, the correct Garmin approved power
OR download cables are a must!!
