Got a Motorola Q from a overseas friend whilst he being on leave in South Africa, but the problem with this phone is that it either doesnt recognise our simcards or our service providers( VODACOM, MTN OR CELL C).Any simcard it read as invalid and this becomes frustrated.Such a hi-tech phone but useless at the moment

You're going to need to call your cellular service provider in South Africa (whoever your SIM card is registered with) and request Tech Support assistance. Tell Tech Support that you have a phone from the U.S. and request they assist you in programming the correct DNS servers (cellular frequencies) and 'Gateway Address' in the phone for both, voice and SMS (texting) in South Africa.

They should be able to easily guide you through programming your phone with the correct frequencies to use it there. It's really not that difficult to do.
