You have to squeeze the safety lever on the handle to disengage the blade brake. This lever is meant to be squeezed while you operate the mower and will stop the mower instantly (well, pretty darn quick) if you release it while the mower is running.

I have been using the trimmer and now the pull start does not catch on the crank shaft. how do I fix this? bought the trimmer less than a year ago

Many trimmers have the pull start at the very top of the engine. Makes it easy to take off and see what's preventing the recoil starter from catching. BUT lately most trimmers have the starter between the Shaft and the engine THESE are tough to disassemble to get to the recoil starter.

Broken spring in recoil starter on lawn mower

While I have not done this on newer model lawn mowers, I have replaced recoil springs in the past. Here's what I did: First you need to pull the spark plug wire off so the engine will not start. Then block the flywheel with a piece of wood to keep it from turning. Then, using another piece of wood such as a short (6-8 inch) hardwood dowel placed against the ears of the recoil drive, and drive it in a reverse direction (clockwise) with a hammer to knock it loose. It may take several sharp blows to break it loose. The recoil drive is reverse threaded to keep it from coming loose when the engine is running. Once the drive is loose, remove it to get access to the recoil spring which must be replaced if it is broken. With a new spring in place, rethread the recoil drive counter clockwise until it is finger tight. Then, tighten it down with one sharp blow against the wooden dowel.

Lawn mover starter rope replacement

most starters can be taken off the engine and replace the rope without completely tearing the whole unit apart. by that I mean you should not have to mess with the recoil spring unless it is broken. remove old rope from pulley, wind up the pulley and hold it so it wont unwind, replace new rope onto pulley and tie a good knot and melt the ends of the rope so it wont unravel, then slowly let the pulley retract the correct amount of rope. if the recoil spring has unsprung on you, it will take a little time and probably several tries to wind it back up and position it back in the starter. they like to unspring while doing this so take some time and an extra person to hold and assist might go a long ways. good luck. I have a 22in recycler lawn mover. the recoil

There is a safety brake on the handle that MUST be held down to start the engine. You must squeeze the safety agaist the handle to operate the mower. If not you will not be able to start the mower.

If your holding the safety mechanism and it is still locked then either the cable has become detached or... borken. Check to make sure the cable is connected to the safety mechanism. If it is and it still does not release then you should in all honesty contact Toro for the nearest warranty repair center.

Pull start on my Toro snowthrower (snow master 20 - model #38020) it wont recoil itself. I removed the starter housing but can not figure out how to get the pulley and starter recoil spring out/off of the...

Its basically the same....best bet is to just buy the new pull start mechanism...they are pretty cheap, and they go bad on those units all the time.
