Many lenses with small maximum apertures (in your case f5.6) have difficulty focussing in low-light situations. Doubt there is a problem, unless if happens in brightly-lit situations - try some test shots on objects out of doors in the sunlight, where there is plenty of visual contrast for the lens to focus on (window frames in a building, for instance). Hi, I had this problem and found that the level inside the camera for the exposure shutter was bent inwards. This was preventing the lens from adjusting the exposure and also from autofocusing. To fix I just bent it back outwards

SOURCE: Lens will not auto focus any more.

Hi there!

I experienced the exact same problem with my 100-300mm lens and I was never able to get it to work correctly again. In fact, attempting to use it further seemed to exacerbate the problem.

The further you zoom, the wider the aperture opens allowing more light for the camera to focus properly. If the aperture mechanism is damaged, the auto-focus process may not work as it should; which would explain why the auto-focus feature works only when at 18mm.

Regardless, I strongly recommend you discontinue use of the lens until a professional technician can examine the lens and figure out what's going on. I'm sure you can contact the manufacturer to open a support case or you can find a camera store that offers repair services.

I hope this helps!

I had the exact same problem, took it to a repair shop, and they said the motor had to be replaced completely for $140! The lens is only 18 months old and was not used THAT much! Argh.

I can't find object in dark. Though the camera should identify (may be red ray focus) the object to take snap. In manually I set up all the possible way but in vain. Could you pls. give me a set up...

Yes, the camera does attempt to illuminate the area to allow autofocus, but the darker it is, the harder it is for autofocus to work. This is a problem even with high-end SLRs.
Usually the center focus point is the strongest and focusing works best when there is a strong vertical line.

There isn't a complete solution, but you there are a couple of work-arounds If you have a camera with manual focus, then use manual focus Point the center focus point on an edge, depress the shutter button 1/2 way to focus, then re-frame the picture.

Taking pics of stars and wont shoot

hi there, your problem may be caused by the lens inabilty focusing on the object,
to slove this, change the selector on the lens to M mode, and don`t forget to focus the object manually before you take a picture of stars

basic setting needed for this condition is ISO 100, EV +1.00, F 22
Using tripod will help so much

My 50 mm 1.4 won't focus on closer objects only far away now after my mom dropped my camera. What can be done? Is it most likely broken?

yes thats a fair bet,,, it could only be the lens that took the brunt of the smack it had and its now jamming when you try to focus up on close ups,,,
try a difrent 50mm lens on it and find out if im right

It seems that in darker situations the camera won't focus

there has to be enough light for the camera to see what to focus on .. the sound you hear may be the camera trying to focus .. in some cameras you can increase the ISO setting to allow it to work in reduced light .. i sometimes use a small led flashlight at close range to get enough light in dark situations .. you can also go to manual focus .. your camera might have a laser or LED light built in to assist in auto focus .. you have to go to the proper menu and turn that on ..

here is some good specific tricks and info on your camera

Reset all the functions to default. Try it again. You probably have mininum ISO on or minimum aperture on.

Focus on Largan Chameleon

Check if you camera is in MACRO mode.

Theres a button on side of the camera that sets it to NORMAL or MACRO mode. Macro mode is the one with a flower symbol. In macro mode you can take sharp pictures from small objects situated very close to the camera lens. Good luck!

Very dark pictures

hi melissa,
your problem is the focusing areas, im sorry that I do not know how to turn it off, the rectangle you see is the area is focusing on, and the darkness is what the camera doesnt focus on, try reading the manual, or turning it off yourself.

Focusing Difficulties

1. Typical problem subjects for autofocus 1) Very low-contrast subjects 2) Overlapping nearby and distant objects 3) Very bright subjects in the center 4) Subjects moving very fast 5) Subjects through glass Focus on an object that is at the same distance as the desired subject, apply Focus Lock, and then recompose the picture. Or set the lens focus mode switch to (or), and focus manually. (Manual focus is only possible with cameras providing this feature.) 2. Attempting to take pictures out of the camera's shooting distance: When taking pictures out of the camera's shooting distance, the subject will be out of focus. The shooting distance differs from each camera model. Please check the specifications of your camera in the instruction manual to determine the shooting distance.
