Re 1. Remove the lower fan duct work from the evaporator cover.

Is this in front or back?

We removed back plate on bottom right hand side... Is this evaporator cover? We see black compressor on right... fan on left... only 1/4 inch screws l;eft are on late covering line to ice maker.

Not sure what we should be looking for from that. Do you have a picture?

    2. Remove the 1/4-in. evaporator cover screws and remove the evaporator cover.
    3. Disconnect the defrost thermostat wiring connector.
    4. Remove the defrost thermostat from the evaporator.

Hi

If refrigerator is not cooling properly it can be due to a defrost timer, which is causing the fridge to go into defrost cycle. Usually it takes 45-60 minutes for refrigerator to come out of defrost cycle. If the timer is bad then it will not come out of defrost cycle and can result in this kind of issues. It can also occur due to defrost thermostat, it allows current to pass through it at temperatures of 20 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit and prevents current from passing through it at 40 to 60 degrees. This is difficult to test, though, because it takes a prolonged, very-cold temperature to turn it on. The defrost thermostat is snapped onto the top portion of the evaporator. The thermostat sends temperature information to the processor. The defrost heater must be replaced when replacing the thermostat.
1. Remove the lower fan duct work from the evaporator cover.
2. Remove the 1/4-in. evaporator cover screws and remove the evaporator cover.
3. Disconnect the defrost thermostat wiring connector.
4. Remove the defrost thermostat from the evaporator.

Hope this helps...please post back for further assistance.

Hi, I have a Maytag (MFD2560HES) fridge. The Freezer is working but the fridge is not cooling. What could be the causes? Alton.

you need to check and make sure the evaporator fan is running in the freezer compartment while the unit is in the cooling mode if it is then check the damper in the top of the fridge and make sure it is opening all the way to allow the cold air in the fridge.if ti does not open it needs to replaced.
If the fan is not running it needs to be replaced also check for excessive ice build up in the freezer compartment that would also block the air flow

FRIDGE NOT COOLING

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp ..
Your damper and controls are on this diagram. http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/getSubComp.pd?modelNumber=MFD2560HES&productCategoryId=0161000&brandId=3048&modelName=MAYTAG-REFRIGERATION&diagramPageId=00006&componentDescription=CONTROLS&documentId=M0412077&backToLink=Return%20to%20Sub%20Components%20list

REF AND FREEZER STOP COOLING

We had a repairman come out, said it was the compressor, bad news...$650 if he repaired...good news...compressor under manufacturer's warranty for five years so you may want to call Maytag. It will be less expensive if the part is covered and you only have to pay for labor. Hope this helps. Bought our fridge 12/2004 so it was covered.

Refrigerator stopped working, freezer works fine

Sounds like the evap fan is not running. The fan takes cold air from the freezer to cool the refer compartment. If the freezer is cold the compressor is running. Generally the freezer will stay cold since the cooling coils are there but it must have the fan working to get the air up to the refer area. Pull everything out the freezer and take the back panel off to view the coils and fan, etc. It's a simple easy job to change the fan. If you find the coils are a total block of ice then it's another problem... the defrost cycle isn't working. Sooo... see if the fan is running in the freezer compartment first. See http://www.partselect.com/Schematics/Maytag/AA43-57.gif for fan location, item 18 is the fan motor. Let us know what you find out.
