You don't need any special software.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or, despite what I said first, you can use any photo cataloging program, such as iPhoto on Mac or Windows Photo Gallery on Windows.

Lumix DMC ZS1 w/4gb card not recognized by Panasonic PhotoFun software, and camera will not power down.

Called Panasonic's Tech Support and talked to a real person (!) on Thanksgiving Day(!). She suggested not disconnecting or turning off the system, as it might damage the SD card. Instead we concluded it would be best to leave the camera alone, and allow the battery to run down. I did, then removed the card. Bought a (Sony) card reader next day, and it works great. Just copied the disk directly from reader to computer, ignoring the Panasonic software.

After loading (and using) the photofun software on

You need to boot in safe mode. Usually, this means to press F8 key repeatedly after turning on your computer. Once in safe mode, go into add/remove programs and remove the offending software. Then, reboot normally and you should be good to go.

Panasonic Lumix Simple Viewer & Photofun Studio Viewer software

If you google your camera model, you will find a location to download software for this camera. The Panasonic Support site is a good starting place..

Kodak has a free photo viewing an touchup software downloadable so you will use their printing service. Another is Picaso by Adobe. Both of these are easier and better than those supplied with camersa. Even Microsoft XP or Vista computer come with a good viewer. Go to Start/Programs/Microsoft Viewer(or some such).

Panasonic DMC TZ3

Just go & download the free Google Picasa 3 program. It is a good viewer & downloads images from a wide range of camers.
