Hi,
Simply stated, it is highly possible that the OSD (on-screen-display) is locked to ON. Since the remote is no longer the original and you have tried most if not all of the known tricks, then it is likely that it was a freak button combination that did it. Your options then are rather limited:
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Locate the Menu/Setup button on the Front Panel of the TV then locate the On-Screen Display options.
I believe this is for the video 2 out. You have a video 1 and video 2, generally the DVD player is on the V1 line, and a surround sound or another accessory is on the V2. If you don't have anything connected to the V2, then you can go into the menu and disable the V2. This should take it off the screen.
Retart the TV mayebe
The desktop screenshot might need reducing Click start "Control Panel." Click "Display" and then select the Settings tab in the Display Properties window. Use the slider bar under in the screen resolution section of the applet to change the resolution and click "Apply." The screen repaints at the new resolution. Click "Yes" to keep the resolution, or answer "No" at the prompt to revert to the original settings.
The taskbar is a central user interface component within the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system.
Located along the bottom of the screen by default, it includes the "Start" button, provides one-click access to all open programs and contains a collection of utility icons and the system clock in a section called the Notification Area.
Windows 2000 gives you the ability to adjust the behavior of the taskbar in several ways.
After you know where to find the proper menu item, performing this task takes only a few clicks.
Right-click on an empty area of the taskbar and select "Properties."
Click the "General" tab located along the top of the resulting dialog box.
Check the Always on Top box if you want the taskbar to appear above all other items on your screen.
Check the Auto Hide box if you want the taskbar to disappear into the bottom of the screen when you move the cursor away from the taskbar.
Check the Show Small Icons in Start Menu box if you want to enable this behavior.
Check the Show Clock box to show the system clock within the Notification Area at the right edge of the taskbar.
Check the Personalized Menus box if you want the "Start" menu to show the items you use regularly and hide the items you don't.
Click "OK" to confirm your changes.
They take effect immediately.
Hope this helps

We've already tried restarting the tv and it did not work.
Video-2 is what our tv runs through, video-3 works the dvd player. How do I get rid of the V-2 at top of screen when watching tv? V-3 shows up while watching DVDs.
I located the menu button on tv, but do not have setup options available for display. Would I try to do this through the cable box?
I do not have the remote to push the display button - somehow this was turned on without the remote. Any idea how to turn off without remote??
I can access the menu from the front of the tv, but then what??? Nothing seems to work for the display.
Tried going through the channel summary option... did not work.
Tried unplugging tv, dvd, etc for 10 minutes. Did not work.
The only options I have are Auto Tuner Setup and Channel Summary. I've tried Auto tuner setup but it ends up skipping channels. I then add them back in Channel Summary but it doesn't seem to affect cable. I still get all channels. I just can't get rid of V-2!!
If I turn V-2 component off, the color goes away. TV works on V-2, DVD works on V-3, nothing works on TV setting.
I'm sure this can be done without the remote since at appeared without it. Any other advice out there?
I have a Comcast cable remote - the only PIP function that seems to work is Swap. Also have a DVD/VHS remote - Panasonic DMR-ES35V.
where do I buy original remote?
Page 39 of the manuel was not helpful. If I turn off V-2 component, I lose the color on the tv.
