I have a Coleman PMO525202.03 generator with 20 hours run time on it. It starts fairly good but initially run very bad. It backfires and is not smooth. Could it be the coil going bad already as I was told. Would appreciate you help and feedback on this. Is it characteristic of this engine ?///

The first thing to check is the air filter. Make sure you replace or clean it well. The second thing, if that doesn't fix it, is your fuel. If it's gas, change it. If it's propane, make sure it's got correct pressure., possible bad pressure regulator.

SOURCE: What type of oil for a Coleman 5000 Generator?

You need a quart of regular old SAE 5W30 motor oil with detergent.
The engines on these generators are more or less the same as a lawn mower.
Don't forget to service/change the air cleaner when you change the oil, that should keep your generator producing full power.

Regards,
Carl

SOURCE: COLEMAN powermate 5000 generator w/a Subaru engine

Check the vent in the fuel cap to make sure its free to breath. It could be creating a vaccume in there and starveing for fuel. Maybe run it with the gas cap off and see if the problem gos away.

SOURCE: My coleman powermate generator will start but will not generate.

The voltage regulator controls the output. You will need to check that first.

Honda generator starts, runs, then stalls and backfires

Honda makes quite good gasoline motors. I doubt it is a valve timing issue but it might be a burned valve or a valve adjustment issue. What does after a while mean? A couple of minutes or 4 hours? Is it running for just a short while and then stops or it runs well for a long time and then stops?

I have a coleman powermate premium plus 6250 generator, put in new plug ,new filter ,changed oil, cleaned the carb, put in new gas. runs ok at half choke but when go full choke it starts backfiring and runs...

if you are running the engine at full CHOKE, then it is flooding the engine, but if you meant off full choke, then the carb is still stopped up. Try soaking in carb cleaner overnight after removing jet & all rubber goods. HOPE THIS HELPS.

I have a 5000 w maxa ER generator that has a battery assist added ( PM 0525312.17 ) Question...Is the battery a regular 12v car battery, or maybe a lawn tractor battery?? Once the generator is started...

Replace battery with your choice of 12v products considering physical size, amp range and warranty. Lawn tractor batteries seem to have the least life/duty cycle. There are two methods of charging the battery used by Coleman. One is to charge the battery with charger/alternator coils installed under flywheel of the engine and second is to charge with built-in circuit in generator itself. Examine your wiring diagram to discover which you have. Simple test with volt meter will show if system is charging. Test voltage at battery with engine off, then start engine and retest looking for slightly higher voltage indicating charge. The charging system is like a trickle charger and not like your auto with initially high amp charge then taper to minimum. If your run your generator for long periods of time and you feel that the battery is being overcharged, then rig a switch to stop charging after one hour or longer. Good holiday

Backfire problems

If your genset is back firing then it could be carberator, bad ingnition coil, fuel pump, poor compression, which should be at least 100 psi.

Generator hard to start and backfiring

Sound like you've done things in the correct order, tecumseh's are notorious for carb problems if you let as sit in them. Backfiring is timing related (flywheel key) or valve problems. I would take a closer look at the exhaust valve I don't believe it is closing all the way.
