My iPaq h1945 states that the backup battery is dead, but I cannot figure out how to replace it. How do I do that? And also, where is the infrared output on my iPaq?

Most of your data (phone directory, calendar etc) is stored your pda's ram. If your LiON battery runs flat , the pda wont start up, your backup battery kicks in to preserve the data. If your NiMH battery runs flat, you will loose all data in the phone or the equivalent of a hard reset.
On the opening screen of iPaq Backup there's a line, "File," where the backup's filename appears, and a little box with 3 dots. Tap that little box and you'll get a menu allowing you to set the location.
