I have an rca atsc converter box, lost instuctions printed out on line. but need the tv code for my new Sanyo hdtv lcd tv model# DP32640. Can you help? I live in a heavily treed area and think the converter box will help with reception. Plus can you send some info on the smart antenna? Would I be able to use it with my current tv with or without the converter box? Box #s DTA800b1L SN: TC805K102B9951

You don't need converter.

get a digital antenna from Walmart along with the power booster that the coax cable screws onto, then a short coax

to the tv. I get great tv from 80 miles away into my woods

SOURCE: Need a smart antenna to go with the Digital TV converter box

First, you don't need a Smart Antenna, the manual is simply stating that your converter will use one if you have it. Any standard antenna will work, so there is no need for a coupon to pay for a new one, whether indoor or outdoor depending on your location and distance from each channel transmission tower. Since you don't give details of what antenna you are using, I will assume you have rabbit ears for each converter. Rabbit ears are notorious for poor reception and any metal or persons nearby will change the reception quality. I would recommend a roof mounted external antenna with splitters for the 3 converters if you have the option. If not, use an amplified internal antenna and mount it closest to the channel towers you will watch most and as high as possible. If you can find a smart antenna, which is an amplified indoor/outdoor antenna with a control cable for changing the direction of reception, for a decent price, you can use that but keep in mind that to use the control feature you will need one for each converter. Also, check antennaweb.org for information on digital channels in your area and their direction and distance. Antennaweb.org will also tell you if any digital channel in your area uses VHF frequencies. If they don't then a UHF only antenna will work fine.

SOURCE: I have an RCA converter box hooked up to an RCA tv

Basically, you cannot use the coax connections for both the VCR and the RCA converter box. I would hook up the phono/cinch connectors from the VCR to the TV if you can (these are also called RCA connectors, but I'm avoiding using that name so we dont confuse the digital receiver with a cable/connector name that is the same here). There should be a yellow one for video and red/white ones for left and right stereo. I believe the RCA converter comes with a three headed cable that can do this for you. With this configuration, you can set the TV to input on these connectors and the VCR should always output there. Once that is set, you can still use the converter box to receive the signal from your antenna, then run the coax to the VCR. Now, the VCR will always have to be set on channel 4 in your setup and you will need to manually change channels on the converter box for it to record a show. Does this make sense so far?

Does this tv have an internal converter box

Here is a helpful link:
http://www.cnet.com/products/rca-l32wd22/specs/

According to this link, no, it will not tune the over the air "ATSC" signals, it will tune what some cable company's have switched to refereed to as Clear QAM.

For a "cable company converter" it would need a cable card slot.

Do I need a convertible box with the new sanyo dp32640

You don't need a digital to analog converter box. The TV has NTSC (analog), ATSC (digital) and Clear QAM tuners.

I hope this helps.

Sanyo DS31590 and converter box

I just checked the owners manual online. Looks like this model only has an NTSC analog tuner. No ATSC digital tuner built in.

If you use cable or satellite TV services, the digital converters won't help you. The coupon-eligible ones are strictly for use with a traditional antenna. If this is your situation, ignore the remainder of this message.

If you use a regular TV antenna with this TV, then, yes, you will need a converter box. FYI, the Insignia model at Best Buy and the Zenith at Circuit City, and elsewhere (radio shack) have gotten good reviews from early purchasers. More converter box models will be available in a few months time.

If your current reception with your antenna is poor (snowy), you may have problems receiving the new DTV signals. If not, you should be pleasantly surprised with the quality of the DTV signals - and the extra "virtual" channels. Try the converter box using the RCA video and audio inputs, for a slightly better picture than with the coaxial cable inputs.

Good Luck

Digital signal conversion

If you have cable TV, satellite TV, or FIOS, the coupon eligible converter boxes aren't needed and aren't useful with those services.
They gov't coupon converter boxes are only good for reception with a regular TV antenna or rabbit ears.

According to the specs on epinions.com, no, this TV does not have a digital tuner. So, if you use a rooftop TV antenna (not satellite dish) or an indoor TV antenna, you WILL need an ATSC to NTSC converter box. You need not wait until next year, however, as most U.S. TV stations are also broadcasting digital (ATSC) now.
