I've searched on ebay/amazon and, the cheapest are these: AG13 LR44 Alkaline Button Cell Battery 10 pack take a look and enjoy
I can usually find the LR44 battery at Walgreens, Walmart and other stores (not Staples as far as I remember). Most recently I've purchased them from online vendors for a better price. (http://www.sciplus.com/category.cfm/subsection/13/start/12/maxrows/11/srch.fp/1 scroll to the fourth item on the list.)
The reason you didn't find the correct size could be that the stores were out, not looking in the right section of batteries, or you didn't check the complete list of equivalent battery labels. The LR44 is also called AG13, A76, L1154, G13, V13GA . At my local Walmart, these are often in the battery section near the cell phones and cameras. At Walgreen, I usually find the G13 batteries near electronics. (Other button battery displays can be focused on the hearing aid size batteries which are usually smaller.)
Amazon lists a 10-pack here: http://www.amazon.com/LR44-Maxell-Alkaline-Button-Battery/dp/B000BMRRPS .
I hope this helps.

(we keep the extras in the refrigerator. It helps that we have several calculators and things that take the LR44 battery. So buying in sets of 10 doesn't lead to an excess number of low voltage batteries due to age.)
I have lr44 call me at 8476955730
