Please Help. I have a Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX. I occasionally remove the front lens element assembly to clean the inner lens element as it gets dusty. The front lens element assembly consists of 2 lens elements in a threaded unit that screws right into the lens barrel and is what you see when you look at the front of the lens. It has 2 opposing notches in the ring so that you can use a tool to remove and replace it. The rear lens element in this assembly broke and I tried ordering the unit from Nikon, but they were rude and very short with me. Ultimately they sent me the wrong part. How can I get a parts list (with a diagram) so that I can positively identify this part? Can I order it from a different source than from Nikon? Thanks!

    Hello kerguney,

I found out that the assembly isn't sold as a unit, but rather as 2 lens elements, 6 screws, a retainer assembly, etc. I don't have the tools to assemble that unit, so I decided to let Nikon fix it.

They told me it would cost between $60 and $130, which I feel is reasonable.

I'm going to try and go that route.

    Thanks!!!

Hi,IF I were you I will search the eBay for a same lens as " parts only " which means lens does not work but you can use the some parts of it ..There are a lot on ebay..one example is below URL..pls visit both..
Brand name services always do this..Since you were doing unauthorized repair ,they do not like it..
Hope this helps! Take care and please Remember to rate/vote and

    Hello,

    Thanks for the reply!

I did the eBay thing before the lenses that are for parts are still very expensive compared to what I believe the actual part should go for.

I'll keep searching eBay in hopes that a badly damaged lens with a usable part becomes available, but that seems to be a long shot.

It would be great if Nikon had exploded diagrams of their lenses with part numbers!

I wonder if any less expensive Nikon lens uses that same front element assembly?

    Regards

I have a Nikon D3100 and want to buy a zoom lens 70-300.Please help I am confused is a Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6G compatible? And is it automatic focus?

That lens will work with the D3100, except for the autofocusing. In order to autofocus with the D3100, you need AF-S lenses, such as the AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED or the
AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR.

Nikon Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR Vs. Nikon Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX are they the same len or not? thanks, Ricky at [email protected]

No. The VR lens has 15 elements in 11 groups, the other has 13 elements in 9 groups. This indicates that the two lenses have different optical designs. The main difference, however, is that the VR indicates "vibration reduction." This lens has motion sensors and tiny motors that move the lens elements to compensate for camera motion, producing clearer pictures when hand-holding the camera.

Lens has lost ability to autofocus.

Nikon guarantees 5 year warranty to original purchaser. If your camera functions with another AF-S lens, then the problem lies with the 18-200mm lens. The AF motor unit needs replacement. Nikon should be able to repair the lens under warranty.
Make a copy of your receipt and go Nikon website to start repair service.

Nikkor af-s 18-200 VR not focusing

Please check your focus settings in the camera menu. Play around with the focus point from Single to 11 points. Also, try Auto mode as a quick way to test if the focus is working

Manual Focus won't work

Which camera are you using? If the body has AF/MF switch, put that also to MF.If this fails to help, take out the lens and try to change it to MF.
