Switch Off Pre-Flash

it sounds like you are try to SEE the pre-flash. you'll never be able to do it with bare eyes. it's all so quick that to the human eyes it all looks instant. don't worry about it. if it working in TTL mode, it does all the pre-flashes it needs, you just to see them. speed of light is quite incredible :)

The FORCED OFF mode is the setting where flash is not activated in any recording condition. this mode used when taking pictures in places where the use of the flash is not permitted.

There are other 5 different mode/setting in using photo flash.

1. AUTO - flash automatically activated according to the recording condition.

2. AUTO/Red-eye reduction - flash is automatically activated according to the recording condition. It reduces the red-eye phenomenon by triggering the flash before actually recording the picture. After that, the flash is activated for actual recording again.

3. FORCED ON - use the when your subject is back-lit or under fluorescent light.

4. FORCED ON/Red-eye reduction - use this when you set the camera to PARTY MODE

5. Slow sync./Red-eye reduction - use this when you take pictures of people in front of a dark background.

The flash mode has to be set.

There are 5 flash modes:

• auto - flash fires when needed
• red-eye reduction - flash fires when needed, but there's a pre-flash to minimize red-eye
• flash on - flash always fires
• flash off - flash never fires
• night - flash fires if necessary (and uses red-eye reduction) to illuminate foreground objects, but shutter stays open to record the background by ambient illumination

hi, even i have the same problem, probably i don't think the flash doesn't work, but even i didn't know how to use it. however, the instruction manual says there are 3 options in flash, they are auto- that is it turns flash automatically on when it turns on. red eye reduction that is it says it will flash twice to reduce red eye but i never see the flash on and the flash off, that is it will not turn on and usually whenever you exit the camera the flash will default to turn off mode. you will need to switch the flash back. hope you understand.

The flash modes are as follows:

AUTO FLASH:

Automatically fires in low-light and backlight conditions.

RED EYE REDUCTION FLASH:

This mode significantly reduces
the phenomenon of “red-eye”
by emitting about 10 preflashes
before firing the regular
flash. This mode works the
same as the auto-flash except
for the pre-flashes.

To change between flash modes:

1 Press the (flash) switch.
● The flash pops up.
2 Press the / (flash mode) button
repeatedly until the desired flash mode
indication appears.
● The flash mode changes ,
● If / is not pressed within 2 seconds after the selection screen is
displayed, the selection screen disappears.
● To de-activate the flash (Flash Off mode ), push the flash back into the
camera.
3 Press the shutter button halfway.
● When the flash is ready to fire, the
(flash stand-by) mark lights.
4 Press the shutter button all the way.
● The flash fires.

If the red-eye reduction is turned on, and you can verify that the pre-flash is functioning, you may need to think about shooting technique. With ultra-compact cameras, the flash is necessarily placed close to the lens. This is the worst design possible to avoid red-eye. To reduce red-eye as much as possible, ensure the red-eye reduction system is turned on (and functioning properly), and get close to the subject. I mean "physically" close, not just close by zooming. Use as little zoom as possible. If the subject is small, move closer, without relying on the zoom lens to make the subject appear closer.

The ADI flash metering mode combines distance information from the auto focusing system with information from a pre-flash exposure. On the other hand, in Preflash -TTL metering mode, the exposure is calculated with a pre-flash only. Flash emission control is manually selectable in three levels from 1/1, 1/4, and 1/16. Pre-flash TTL metering must be used when a diffuser is attached to an external flash or a filter to the lens. Attachment of those accessories may cause error in distance information necessary for ADI (Advanced Distance Integration) metering due to reduced entering light. Hi, While I do not have a P72, I find this problem odd. Most flash cycle times are so rapid that your grandaughter could not possible close her eyes in that time period (the travel time for the flash to fire and be reflected from the child's face is far faster than a human blink). The problem may be in pre-flash and not the flash itself. So that redeye-reducing "feature" may be responsible for your problem. Does your camera have a redeye reduction mode on the flash?
