I checked the drain hose for clogs and found none. There is some sediment in the plastic container where water is held. What else should I diagnose before I buy any parts to replace?

I keep getting error code F21 on my kenmore elite which is a drain error the drain is not clogged and the drain hose is not clogged any ideas on what I could do?

The error code F21 is similar to F02 which both pertains to a draining problem. The usual cause is a blocked drain filter or a clogged/kinked. But since those areas are found to be not the source of the problem, the problem must be somewhere else. It is either the drain pump is broken particularly the impeller if the pump just hums/whirs or the pressure switch contacts are stuck/welded together and is, therefore, not tripping. The link below provides the detailed troubleshooting instructions the problem of this kind after the drain filter has been cleaned out.

Error Code F02/F21 on Whirlpool Duet and Kenmore Elite Front Load Washers (Filter Cleaned)
tip

F21 Error Code on Whirlpool Duet & Kenmore Elite Front Loader Washers

This advice is for Kenmore Elite and Whirlpool Duet model FRONT LOADERS displaying the “F21” error code.

“F21” is a Long Drain error. If the drain time exceeds 8 minutes this error code will be displayed. In addition, a “SUDS” error may also be displayed. This may be an indication of a drain pump problem and/or clog in the drain line. You will need to check the following:

  1. First, attempt to unplug the washer for at LEAST 30 minutes to reset the Central Control Unit (CCU). Sometimes this is all that is required to correct momentary glitches with the unit. If the error code returns, proceed to step 2.
  2. Check the drain hose to make sure it is not kinked or clogged.
  3. Check the electrical connections to the pump and ensure the pump is running.
  4. Remove the drain pump filter and check for foreign objects and/or debris.
To check the drain pump, click on the following link for step-by-step instructions.

Washer stops and flashes F21

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. Error F21 indicates long drain, this error occurs when the drain time exceeds 8 minutes. To resolve this check the drain hose and make sure it is not kinked with any foreign particles; also clean the drain pump filter for any clogs. Also check if the pump is running fine. If still the issue is not resolved after all this then you might have to replace the pump. Please do rate the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks

Stops and has a code sais F21 press stop and it sounds that it is draining and takes a while

The F21 error code indicates a long drain. Here are some tips that should help you resolve this problem:
  • Check your washer drain to make sure that it is draining properly.
  • Check the drain hose for kinks and clogs. Make sure that it is installed properly per the instructions in your owner's manual. An improperly installed drain hose can prevent the washer from draining properly.
  • Check for excessive suds in the washer tub. Excessive suds can prevent the washer from draining properly and will result in the F21 code. Make sure that you are using the proper amount of HE (High Efficiency) detergent to prevent excessive suds.
Remove any clothes and then use a wet/dry shop vac to drain any water out of the washer.

Arrange shallow pans and/or towel in front of the large item filter shown in the second image below to catch residual water when you remove this filter.Remove the large item filter as shown below. It is likely that you will find a clog in this area that is preventing your washer from draining.

If you do not find any clog or restriction in the large item filter and none of the other issues discussed above apply to your situation, then you could have a failed drain pump. If the pump is damaged and will not pump out water then it will need to be replaced.

What does F21 mean on the Kenmore Elite Washer?

Check the drain line for kinks or obstructions. Check the pump. Remove the hoses from the pump and use a flashlight to look into the suction port. Look for anything clogging the pump (like the occasional stray sock) and check the pump impeller. Make sure there are no broken/missing blades and that the impeller will spin freely. If any blades are broken/missing or if you cannot get the impeller to spin freely, the pump is defective. Hopefully it's just a clogged pump, drain line, or a jammed impeller. Hope this helped and best wishes.

KENMORE WASHER

"F21" is a Drain Error code. I would suggest you check your drain pump reservoir for any obstructions. The following link explains how:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385844-checking_drain_pump_kenmore_elite_front

The pump reservoir can become clogged with debris and present a slow drain problem. If anything has been clogged in the pump for any significant length of time, it can potentially cause damage to the drain pump. If you clean the pump out and the problem does not go away, you will have to replace the drain pump. If it comes to this, let me know and I can give you further advice on where to obtain a replacment and how to replace it. I hope you find this information helpful.
