put a large piece of cardboard on the windshield before messing about with wiper arms. Sounds silly until one breaks a $300 - $500 windshield while replacing a $15 wiper arm.

wiper arms were not mounted at the right spot, it could have damaged the motor as it returned to the rest position, unfortunately. If there is noise, the noise could be coming from the wiper arm joint
