I have been storing data
The data is still on the disk but can you get it is the issue.
If the logic board is still good and the drive is recognized by bios that it is do able. But if the drive is not recognized, you may need some recovery service. If you really want your data, don't format since that erases all and makes a recovery operation even more difficult and expensive.
Bottom line - it is always prudent to have backups of backups for obvious reasons..
If this is an external drive remove it from the shell and connect it directly to computer. Might be the electronics in the shell that have gone bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can't access the files anymore. how can I retrive them?
If the hard drive itself is damaged, your files may be permanently lost. There are companies that will attempt to recover your files from the drive for a fee... that usually involves sending them your drive with pre-payment. They will often disassemble your drive in a clean-room environment and transfer your disks to another identical drive then try to access the data. If the disk surfaces are damaged, files on the damaged areas are usually not retrievable...
If you purchased the new case, as the company recommended, then properly moved your drive into the new case, it is likely that you will have to resort to the recovery scenario above.

Acomdata external hard USB hard
Either the hard drive is bogus or the electronics of the external adapter is the culprit. Take out drive and hookl directly to mo bo as a secondary drive. If recognized drive is ok and the box is at fault.
