ConvertXtoDVD can do this and can give you the option of burning the converted result directly to DVD-R. It is a shareware program.

Many DVD players can handle .divx files on a CD-R, but takes a while to read the contents before playing them, then there are .mp3 and .jpeg which is a fairly common file format, playable almost anywhere. It is unlikely or extremely rare that any standalone DVD player or similar external device can play .avi raw data files successfully.
