I think when it does that, it's because the email has been erased or is trying to be erased on another unit, such as an iPhone or an Apple computer. Try refreshing the screen ( pull down from the top of the list) or go to the unit which may still be trying to erase the email. Sometimes, we close the unit too fast after trying to erase the email and it goes to sleep without completing the job.

The top corner button is really just a "screen off" button.
