Make sure that the faceplate is screwed down tightly, also make sure there is not a build up of lint and threads under the feed dogs. :-)

I can not get the top thread to pick up the bobbin thread on a machine I have just bought .It was sewing fine and then the bobbin ran out. I have tried every which way but nothing works which way should the bobbin be winding

Install a brand new needle. If that doesn't work, your machine is out of time and needs service.

You don't say if it is a clutch motor or a servo motor. They answer to your question is yes you can slow it down by either motor (usually a knob or switch) and by pulley. If you don't have a servo motor I would strongly urge you got contact Cobra Steve at leather sewing machine company (google it) Tell him you want one of the smart servo motors with needle position-er (needle up and down automatically) His smart servo motors are also modified so they work very similar to home sewing machines... with graduated speed based on how hard you press the pedal. Not sufficient downward force on the pressure foot.

Not sure what is causing this. Was it OK before or has ut just started doing this? Did you recently buy new bobbins? But make sure that the bobhins you are using are flat or a little concave , whichever it is for your machine.:)
