Purchase the remote control, install batteries, and try it before taking anything apart. If the new remote control does not work, the internal receiver may have failed.

I always look for the simplest answer first.
This MAY be the problem: you reinserted one or more of the batteries with the wrong orientation. Typically, they will connect in series to produce a higher voltage than a single battery by itself.
For example, an AA battery puts out about 1.5 Volts, and two AA's in series would produce about 3 Volts, with the positive of one battery connecting to the negative end of the other; the negative of the first and the positive of the second connect to the remote's terminals. The connection between the two batteries is usually in the battery holder in the remote, and the batteries will be physically oriented in opposite directions. For example:batts-g3g4rd04a0x5u31qpoveqzom-1-0.gif
Of course, something inside the remote may have broken instead, but double-check the battery connections first.

I had the same problem and finally determined there is a small plastic tab on the underside of the cover opposite the screw. That tab is in the center edge of the cover. After removing the screw, hold the remote with the screw side up, then use your thumb to press down in the center of the cover on edge seam where the cover meets the remote body. While pressing down you will be able slide the cover off the end of the remote to expose the CR2032 disc battery. Replacing the cover by sliding it on is much easier than removing it. Hope this helps.
