The drive wont let me save any data
If the USB Port is 2.0, it might not work if the drive is 2.0. Also, some USB Ports don't carry enough power to handle a drive that does not have it's own power source.
Hi, guys. Just received
Yes all external drives can be formatted but formatting will always wipe off everything on it. If you want to format it you can right click on it when it appears in Windows Explorer. You are usually offered the choice of file system FAT or NTFS. FAT is limited to a file size of about 4 GB, so usually choose NTFS, I am presuming you are talking Windows system. Then you would have to copy your files to it once again.
I cannot transfer a large file to my external hard
right click on the external hard drive , click on properties , click on compatibility tab
tick box and high light win operating system that you have ( win xp, vista 7,8 etc) click apply then ok
indicates that it is a compatibility problem
Recently updated to snow leopard and when I went
Welcome to the negative about the beloved Apple. I remember when this IT person learned about Apple. Someone had a boot problem with their Mac, I found out I had to go to the Apple Store and make an appointment with a "Genius" person to purchase the unique coded boot disk for that machine. A stinking boot disk! This is why you cant find help with a Mac or Apple whoever they are.
Not an expert on Apple as no one is by design. But its looking for the user of your old OS to allow access to the file. In windows you go to the root directory and change the permissions and all subdirectories and that should be it.
But don't be surprised if you have to go to the Apple store and meet your Genius and pay them some money as encrypting that data and keeping the decryption key is just the proprietary things they do.
Check the help files for the backup software you used would be my first stop.
How to unprotected
It may be you're trying to move files under the wrong credentials
. In which case you'll need to log in as administrator before you'll be able to copy.
How do you get the
one thing that is possible, is that you may have another drive letter assigned to the letter the iomega is trying to use.
Try this....Click on your start orb and type in Disk Management.
open the Disk Management utility in Windows and see if you see the iomega drive listed in the list of disks on the bottom.
If you DO see the iomega drive there, make sure it shows a healthy partition (It should say something like Fat 32 or NTFS as the file system type...if it shows "RAW" or "damaged" or something like that, you may need to erase and format the drive)
Then, try right clicking on the drive and choosing "Change Drive Letter and Paths..."
from there try a new drive letter in case you already have another peripheral using the drive letter the iomega drive is trying to grab. This could cause Windows to recognize the drive but still be unable to see it in your explorer.
Good Luck
No power, will not power on
The obvious answer is that the power supply is dead. If there is no external power supply connected then try connecting to an external powered usb hub. The drive is not getting power and the computer's USB power is not enough.
My iomega external hard drive
Hello
Okay , so there are some steps to figure out what is wrong with your external.
Firstly , if your computer makes a sound when you plug in your external ,
go to Start-Control Panel-Administrative Tools-Computer Management-Disk
Management , and see if your external drive is listed here with your
local drives. If it is listed , right click on the drive and change the
drive letter to make it appear in "my computer".
If your drive does not make a connection sound when connecting to your
computer and also does not show up , please follow the next step.
Remove the hard drive from the casing if possible and install it in your
computer case or another external case.If the drive works , the problem
is with the casing and you can ignore the drive.
Now , if the problem is with the casing , there are still 3 possibilities.
- The USB cable between the drive and the computer may be damaged.
- The circuit board which connects your drive to the interface of the external may be blown.
- The power supply (if applicable) may have a blown transformer.
The
latter is the easiest to diagnose , does your external light up at all
when you plug in the power? If not , then this is probably your problem.
On the bottom of the adapter is a label which you will be able to use
to have a new adapter made at your local electronics shop and this will
cost about $30 max. They will also be able to test the adapter with a
clamp meter to see if this is really the problem and this should be
free.
The second component you want to test is the USB cable. If
you have a printer , swop out the cables and see if your printer
functions normally. Most externals use the same connector so you should
be able to test it in this manner. If the cable works go on to the last
step. If the cable is defective , replace it with a new one which you
can find for about $10 at most electronics and chain stores.
The
last component to test is the circuit board. This is a bit of a grey
zone as you probably won't be able to spot the blown component unless it
failed really badly. With the casing already opened , locate the
external's circuit board and check to see if you have any blackened
components or fluids leaking from some components. If all the other
components of the external worked perfectly , then this is the faulty
part. It is not really economical to replace the circuit as most of the
time it is out of production by the time you need to replace it and it
still costs a lot even if it is available so if your drive is working
perfectly when connected via sata or IDE on your computer , the best is
to buy a new casing and place your old drive in the new casing.
A casing costs about $50 and you could get it at most tech shops and big chain stores like Best Buy.
I hope this solves your problem and please reply if you need more help.
Kind Regards
Andrea
Backup files from a PC and copy to a MAC?
Mac can read a PC formatted drive but a PC cannot read one formatted by mac. So format the drive on the PC wiping all information on it, copy to it. Move the files to the MAC and reformat.
