There is a 90 % possibility that the wireless settings on the gaming adapter and the router are not the same. Try to reconfigure this again. Ethernet cable means CAT5 or UTP for others or LAN cable. The connection should be LAN port of your computer to LAN1 of your router.

And you can connect also the internet cable usually ethernet cable from your internet provider directly to (ethernet cable)WAN port of your router to get signal from your internet provider.

Also if you get this message, this could also means you still don't set up or configure the router's settings to communicate when your LAN and router. They must see each other to access the router's utility webpage.

I don't recommend using the software as most of the time, it either prevents a connection to the router or a connection to the internet. Sometimes both. (I've seen it.)

Instead, use Windows XP's built-in Wireless Zero Configuration (Or use Vista's built-in wireless network detection.) As long as your drivers for your wi-fi adapter are properly installed, you shouldn't have problems using the built-in connection methods.

As for the software... All it's really there to do is help you to bypass the default security of the router in order to get initially connected. I've found the software to be nothing but troublesome in the long-run.

My recommendation is to remove the Linksys software. If you are not able to connect to the router after that, use an ethernet cable to attach the PC to the router so that you can configure the router. Set up wireless security that way.

Once you have configured the wireless security, you should know what your encryption key is. (Write it down for yourself.) Use the built-in wi-fi configuration tools in Windows to seek out the wireless router and connect to it. Type in your key when asked for it and you shouldn't have any problems.

You may consider using the RESET button on the back of the router if you continue to have issues.

One other problem I've often run into is using DSL with the Linksys WRT54G routers. Some DSL modems just aren't compatible with the WRT54G routers. Primarily the older DSL modems.

For example... I had a client recently who had bought the WRT54GS router. He just could NOT get it connected to his DSL modem. Even using the Linksys software. It just wouldn't use the router as a legit gateway device. (He was connected by ethernet and could get into the router's config interface.)

I eventually advised him to contact Qwest and have them send him a much newer version of their DSL modems. (The one he had was a DINOSAUR.) They sent him a new one. Once he got the newer one, we were able to get it networked right away. WITHOUT any extra software. Just using Windows.

Also be sure to check the configuration of your wi-fi adapter in your laptop. Make sure that it is not configured with an old configuration and is set to automatically get an IP from your router. Don't use a static IP while trying to troubleshoot your problem. Let the router configure the IP of your laptop for you. It could just be something as simple as the DNS servers aren't configured properly. (You can find your internet IP and DNS servers in the router's status page, by the way.)

This problem is solved, as you believed, with a firmware update. This is something to be done with an extreme sense of caution. One misstep and your router is useless.

STEP 1: Check your version (it is on the bottom of the router on the sticker, for mine it was version 2 so if you have version 1 proceed with caution.)

STEP 2: go here: http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/home and scroll to the bottom and enter your model number (the number on the front of your router) Mine was BEFSX41.

STEP 3: click on the "GET DOWNLOADS" link

STEP 4: Select version 2 (ONLY IF YOU HAVE MY EXACT MODEL AND VERSION. MISTAKES HERE TURN YOUR ROUTER INTO A PAPERWEIGHT!)

STEP 5: Download the version 1.52.15 (dated 06/08/2007) file and save it to your computer somewhere you can readily find it again.

STEP 6: Log in as administrator to your router. If you are unsure as to how to do this, seek another help file or simply run ipconfig in the cmd (windows key + r, type cmd and hit enter) to get to the prompt and type ipconfig and determine your port. (local) Type that IP address into your web browser and a prompt for your admin login should pop up. If not, you have the wrong IP, try again or seek further help.

STEP 7: Select the "Administrator" tab and click the "Firmware Upgrade" sub-tab. Here browse to the file you downloaded and click "Upgrade". NOTE: This is where you can break things. Make sure no one is using the router to download/upload files or do anything intensive and make SURE the power is never lost to the router or it's a dead stick. Wait a couple minutes for the firmware to update.

STEP 8: If and I stress IF because you can make mistakes doing this that will ruin your router forever, no going back, it's broken, buy a new one kind of stuff, the update completes you should get a blank screen with a "Close" button. It should say the update was successful.

Now, load Aion and there should be no further connection problems.

NOTE: I had already forwarded the necessary ports before doing this firmware update. You can easily google the ports necessary for forwarding. If problems persist you are outside of my ability to help you, because you either fried the firmware (trashed your router) or you have other hardware conflicts. (check your network card, compatibility issues, etc.)

It fixed everything for me in one shot, but this is a touchy issue. BE VERY CAREFUL. Make sure power will never be lost to any device (no thunder storms, no rolling brown outs, etc.) And best of luck.

To reiterate, the reason I am stressing so much caution is because your router is shipped with the firmware flashed onto it. This is what makes it work, function, be able to be changed / tweeked / fixed. If you ruin your firmware somehow your hardware is destroyed. If you follow the steps exactly and don't do anything hastily you will be fine, but this is one of those "void the warranty" scenarios. DO NOT take ANY firmware files not on the official website for your router. DO NOT turn off your router or computer during updating. DO NOT touch anything while it is working. It took me about 5 minutes to finish the process, but to be honest I would walk away, go out to a bar, do something else for the evening before I ever canceled anything in this process because doing so ensures your need to purchase a new router. It is doable safely. I did it slightly drunk, it's a long explanation but that's because there are more than 3 things to click on and if you screw up you just spent $100 minimum. I just want you to be wary of advice from the internet. Just because I can do it does not mean anyone can do it. If you have ANY doubts, ask for help.

So you need a router with a DHCP server built into it. DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Control Protocol. And the settings for telnet access, ssh access etc are protocols and you are most likely thinking of firewall settings which would most likely be in a router. The firewall can control access to TCP/IP logical port numbers used by the telnet and ssh protocols .

Kingsolmn, your solution is by far the most stupid one I have ever heard. If the darn thing does not power up is ovious that we will try another outlet. Besides, this plugs directy to the outlet, no cable. It appears that you have never seen one of this expanders and you should not be posting if you have no knowledge of this things.
