It depends how you "reinstall" windows. If you do a "reset" it keeps your programs and files, but if you format the hard drive, you lose everything that was on that drive. Everything, programs, pictures, documents, and videos. Apparently this is what your friend did, and once he installed Windows on the hard drive, the chance of you getting much of your stuff off the drive is extremely slim. You will need to reinstall all your programs. Vista has Service pack 1 and Service pack 2. Hopefully you can go somewhere and download these to a flash drive, bring it home and update. Usually after updates at least some of your drivers should be installed. If not, you will need to download them to your flash drive. It is easiest to install the lan (ethernet) driver first, then you can go online from home and download the rest. Microsoft would be my first choice for updates and drivers, the manufacturer second. Usually I go online and leave it for a few hours, or overnight. Updates will automatically download.
