It is more than likely a belt. Probably a square type belt. They typically have a life span of a decade or so but when they start to go they go quick. Letting them sit around unused for periods will actually make them more prone to die. A service manual is a best bet - try google searching or eBay - but you can track down the parts via Sears Parts direct. There are several parts sourced on line but I have great luck with Sears. Enter the make and model and see what it lists. Common things like belts for vcr, cassette decks, vid cameras, were used in many different things over time so they actually have stuff in stock still. Also check YouTube for how-to videos, as most of these repairs are common and similar process for different machines.

This means you need to get it serviced, because it has detected a fault or error.

Have you tried Freemake video convertor ? It is free, and can convert most formats

Like new, except it doesn't work ? Yeah, right. Re-cycle it and replace it.

Videos recorded on one camcorder very seldom play back in another, due to the internal codes put on the tape by the original machine.

Try removing the battery for 24 hours

Buy a very inexpensive SD card reader form eBay and with that directly read the SD information using the USB port on the PC.

Obtain a compatible camcorder, or a video transfer kit.

It is probably shutting down because it senses there is no tape movement, to conserve battery power.
