I have a Panasonic DVC20P
Jeff,
Your first option should have been to return it to the original supplier for a warranty replacement. As a third party has been involved, you have probably voided your warranty. All you can do now is to contact Panasonic, explain the situation with a copy of the original receipt, and see what they say. We at Fixya cannot help with anything other than advice.

Image 'melts' into
I think the technical term is 'ruined'. Cameras are not built to withstand such abuse. Repair is unlikely to be cost-effective, so replacement seems the only option, taking the cost out of the kids' pocket money.
I am curious, though - why on earth did you leave an expensive electronic device anywhere that they could get hold of it ?
Flash wont work
AS you know, cameras are very sophisticated and delicate, and messing with it yourself might lead to more damage..It sounds like maybe you have a connection or connector that may have corrosion on it that is getting worse over time. That's what I would look for. If you don't see anything obvious after taking whatever you need to apart to see the areas that moisture may have gotten into, I would take it to a qualified technician to have it diagnosed..Good luck.
