Schwinn 450 turns off after 5 seconds
The symptoms seem to be either stopping or displaying the "keep striding" message after 5 seconds, depending on the program/course in play. The most likely reason is the speed sensor is not working. A call to Schwinn support suggested opening the frame by pulling the crank to get to it. In my case, I found a simpler step to try first, and in my case it resolved the problem. Note: this may not be applicable to all models - I have a 450.
Remove the two screws holding the storage bin (at the base of the console mast) in place. See if the speed sensor is properly positioned. I found that it had become detached from the bracket and was just lying on the inside. I glued it back to the bracket (using a flexible adhesive good for plastic and other materials), and lo and behold, everything is working!
If this doesn't work, then your speed sensor is probably bad and it's on to the full and more lengthy repair. You will need to get a crank puller for a tapered crank from a bicycle shop to complete the job. Talk to Schwinn support; they were really good the two times I called.
Here are a couple of pictures showing the storage bin removed and the correct position of the speed sensor.
How do you remove pedal arms on schwhinn biodyne 220 so the shroud can be removed?
There should be a circular insert at the shroud that the crank arms for the pedals go through. It took me a little careful work to pop the inserts out of the shroud. This leaves a just enough space to carefully squeeze the shroud over the pedals allowing access to the interior. Its a tight fit and may require tackling it from different angles to get the shroud off. It can be done, but be careful not to apply too much pressure resulting the cracking off the shroud.
