Assuming you are using a cable to connect your cell phone to the speaker you could be overloading the input of the speaker when you turn the phone volume up very high. That would cause distortion that might damage the speaker so it shuts down or turns off.

Unplug the player from the wall, press power button on the player for about 10seconds and plug in power again.

I suspect there is either a problem with the radio (AM side) or most likely it is a matter of poor AM signal strength where you are and/or high levels of interference. With FM reception the wire lead of the earphones acts as a fairly efficient antenna but AM reception is via the internal ferrite rod aerial that also is part of the tuned circuit and consequently is not only highly directional but is sensitive to vertical/horizontal orientation - if the signal is polarised vertical the antenna is more efficient when it too is vertical, unfortunately horizontal polarisation is more common. Development of AM receivers stopped decades ago due to it falling out of favour because of high levels of interference around population centres causing much dissatisfaction and a move to FM and over the last two decades an increased interest in digital radio.

Sometimes the TV has to be selected in the setup menus to send the audio to the rear panel outputs

Perhaps it's due to a bad speaker wiring, or a short where the wires connect to the unit.
