My personal suggestion would be to go for these repair catalogs. I know this website reliable-store that i used to buy them from, and they sold online it was very good manual. Go ahead, I bet.

What is the model and make, there isn't a cooling system in a TV unless its plasma and nothing in there should be getting hot enough to where you hear sounds like a heater cooling down, I wouldn't use the set before having it checked out by a technician

One of my EDTVs has the same issue, though on a much smaller scale (it doesn't degrade the picture at all; it's only noticeable when the top of the screen is black, and it doesn't go down very far). Online reviews of the TV showed me it does have this problem commonly, so yours may too. It must be something you need to get it serviced for.
