Hi, yes there is. I saw that using the menu presences to find the initialize option and activate it is the way to run a factory reset on your machine. So, you can start with this first. Otherwise, please reference the manual. Thank you.

Is it using a switching power supply cube? They often time get defectiveand are unreliable. Sound like a power supply problem either way.

Look for small leaver or any contact switches. They might have become bent out of shape or broken, or have dirt in them, cutting off the sound. Also check the leads coming from the head, they might have become detached or at least you can trace where they join the PC board. If you touch where they join you should get a buzz on either channel.

With no media in the recorder. 1. Press the Menu button 2. use the Multi Jog knob to highlight utility 3. Press in on the Multi Jog knob to choose utility menu 4. Scroll down in the utility Menu and highlight Factory Reset 5. Press the Multi Jog knob to choose Factory Reset 6. Press the Multi Jog again knob to execute the Factory Reset it will remember the time and I think what input you were using.

the tascam 414 is a 4 track recording studio which uses standard cassette tapes- meaning they only play in one direction, because the tape is full. The 414 records at double speed so that recording fidelity is increased. When you have made a recording you want to mix you then dub your recording though the outputs into another standard tape recorder or whatever you have available, be it a cd recorder or your PC. So, when you listened to your recording on a standard tape player, you were not only hearing it at half speed but you were only listening to 2 of the 4 tracks. The other tracks would only be heard if you flipped the tape over, and they would be heard running backward. I would have though the 414 had a swich to allow it to also record at standard speed to but I guest it does not.

I am by no means an expert, but is there a possibility that the recorder requires repair ?

It should work I would think as it uses the same OS. I suspect the hdd has issues it the system doesn't complete its boot.

Turning the power off with out going through the shut-down process will sometimes trash the hard drive making it un readable. To force format of hard drive hold down the shut down, send, shift and quick routing keys at the same time then turn power on. This will format the HD. When finished the display will show "Factory initalize complete" "please power off" NOTE you will lose every thing on the HD including the demo song.

There is an idler wheel behind the platen ( black plate behind the cassette)..replace the idler wheel.

It is possible the control transistor in the capstan motor has shorted due to age. There is a control in the deck for calibration of speed but then you need equipment and a MXT111 test tape to set the speed. So you may need a new Capstan motor or maybe just an adjustment- hard to say exactly without me looking at it- yes, I still fix them. I have been doing them for about 45 years and I worked at Teac as a Lead Tech in Arlington Heights IL.
