Toshiba Portege - Answered Questions & Fixed Issues - Page 4
AC adapter/charger is attached, but
Ifthe laptop battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be wornout. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cyclesand will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% andgradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up atall.
ORThe battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected thebattery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time.
Ifthe battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to bereplaced.
I have a Toshiba Portege
Sounds like there might be dust inside of the laptop that is blocking one of the air vents. Plus the connectors to the screen may need to be reseated so that way the screen can be moved freely without it locking up on you and cutting off.
You have two issues going on. Bring it to somebody so they can open it up and make sure the air vents are cleaned out. Also they need to make sure the CPU fan is running properly. Then with the screen the connectors need to be reseated. Its also quite possible the screen connector might need to be replaced.
If the laptop is under warranty see if Toshiba will reapir it.
Mouse touch pad quit working
Well i'm not there, so i can't actually fix it for you, but chances are, assuming nothing out of the ordinary happened to it (eg, dropping it) you may have accidentally locked the mousepad. You can fix this in the control panel. I forget exactly where though...
I have a Toshiba tablet M780-s7230 and i tried
Have you turned on the Touch feature on Windows 7 yet? That could be the reason why your touch screen feature is not working.
To turn it on please follow this:
1. Open your Start menu and type "Touch" into the search bar. This will show a variety of options, including the "Pen and Touch" options. Double-click it to open the "Pen and Touch" window.
2. Check the boxes next to the "Use your finger as an input device" and, if preferred, check the "Enable multi-touch gestures and inking" box as well.
3. Click "Apply" to set the options and click "OK" to exit the window.
Hope this helps!

this problem occurs when the files in the master boot record get corrupt
due to the actions of the viruses or any malfunction
this problem can be solved by repairing the current OS by the OS cd
if you are an expert you can edit the MBR

Try removing the battery and see if it will boot without it
Then check the caharger, charging light should be green and steady on the charger itself
If it is flickering, it meand power is not making a circuit, test charger jack with a DC volt multimeter with one probe to the outer side (earth) and one on the inner (positive). If this is ok, check the charging socket is not loose (if it is, will need replacing).
After that, suspect the power strip or charging / powerboard is dead on the motherboard
Key board don't work on
Hello,
If your keyboard won't work, then it means you will have to do replace it. But before that, you will have to check first if the keyboard isn't disabled on your PC.
Go to Start > Control Panel > Keyboard.
Select hardware, select your keyboard name, then click properties. Click Change settings, click drivers and check if your keyboard was uninstalled or disabled. If it was disabled, you can enable it.
But if the above isn't the cause of the problem, get a USB keyboard (external keyboard), insert it into the USB port of your Toshiba protege m400 and it should work pending the time you have your keyboard replaced.
Good luck.

It means that the BIOS cannot find a disk to boot.
Make sure you selected the hard drive in the boot settings of your BIOS
Remove all external DVD drives or floppy drives or ethernet cables
If you get an error message, you should start troubleshooting your hard drive.
I did a Google update
If you are lucky, there will be a restore point you can go back to on your computer. I expect Google update is unhappy with XP as it is an OS that is no longer supported.

That BIOS-password exists to protect you, should a thief gain posssession of your computer.
Find your original sales-receipt, to prove that you are the rightful owner, and telephone Toshiba.
Ask for Technical Support -- they can help you "nullify" that BIOS-password.
When booting, the system hangs
You can access the BIOS usually by pressing "esc", "F1", "F8", or "F12". One of those buttons
should work.
As for the hang up at the logo, it sounds like your hard drive might have crashed. The same thing
happened to me on my Vaio.
We bought the portege tablet version used and
If the hard drive is still intact, press F8 at boot up and run the restore programme. That will reformat the drive and put it back as it was when shipped. If that is not available, place an OS disc in the DVD drive and boot from there choosing "fresh install" to format the drive and start again.
Hope that helps.
Hi,
1. How to transfer/copy bootable XP files
Requirements
- PC running Windows XP/2000 with a CD/DVD burner.
- USB Flashdrive (Or some way to transfer files to the 3epc once Windows is installed)
- SD Card, a fast SDHC is recommended of at least 2GB.
- XP3eSD Utility
- Hitachi Microdrive Filter Drivers
- Partedmagic (or another bootable CD with disk cloning software)
- Windows XP CD (SP2 Only Tested, may work with others)
- Asus Eee PC (Of course!!)
Instructions:
- Copy all files from your XP Install CD to a folder on your Hard Drive
- Download the XP3eSD utility and run it to create a new install CD capable of installing Windows to boot off the SD card reader
- Boot your 3epc from the CD made in step 2
- Install Windows onto a FAT partition, deleting all the existing partitions
- When windows boots for the first time turn off the swap file, system restore, and the screensaver.
- Then stick your USB thumb drive into the EEE with the Hitachi Microdrive Filter.
- Next copy the files from your thumb drive to the desktop and then properly remove the thumb drive.
- Unzip the microdrive files to a folder on the desktop. And Insert your SDHC Card into the EEE.
- You need to then Hit Start go to run, and type regedit. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\USBSTOR\
Inside that you should find a directory called something like Disk&Ven_USB2.0&Prod_CardReader_SD0&Rev_0100. Open it. Inside that you should find another directory wich is just a bunch of numbers. Open it. In the right pane you should see a key called "Hardware ID" Right click on it, and select modify. It should list about 7 lines of text. Copy ONLY the first line to the clipboard. Hit cancel, close regedit.
- Open cfadisk.inf in the directory you unzipped the microdrive filter to. Edit the section called [cfadisk_device] so that rather than containing 11 lines, just have one line. The line begins with: %MicroDrive_devdesc% = cfadisk_install,
After the comma, hit ctrl V to paste what you coppied from the registry into the file then save the file.
- Go to Device manager. Under disk drives, you should see SiliconMotion and USB2.0 Card Reader. Right click on the card reader and click update driver. Direct the driver updater window to the Hitachi driver you just edited. It won't detect the driver automatically, you have to specifty that your supplying the disk for the hardware and force it to use the driver.
- Reboot using the Partedmagic CD or USB Flashdrive, Download it here
- Create a FAT32 partition on the SD card, same size as the one on the SSD in your 3epc
- Use 'fdisk -l' to find out the partition names of your SSD and SD.
- Type this command into a prompt: 'dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sdb1' When it finishes (it will take some time) type this command: 'dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb bs=512 count=1' (Note: If fdisk reported your SSD and SD as different than sda and sdb respectively, you must change that in the dd commands, if unsure ask in the support forums)
- When it finishes the task is complete, reboot and select to boot from the card reader
- Re-image the SSD of your 3epc with your restore DVD or USB.
